Dane County Clerk Scott McDonell lines up with other Wisconsin election officials in deciding not to use a model ballot for the November election which has been challenged as confusing. Although McDonell is a Democrat, most of the opposition has come from Republicans who say that ballot benefits Democrats.

Fitchburg police are looking for one or more suspects believed to be involved in a shooting near the intersection of Green Way Cross and Coho Street Sunday evening. Police say officers were called to a report of gunshots fired around 5 p.m. Witnesses said about five to ten shots were exchanged.

A man accused of fatally beating his autistic half-brother and hiding his body has reached a plea deal with prosecutors in Dane County. Jeffrey Vogelsberg returned to court Tuesday and pleaded no contest to second-degree reckless homicide in the 2012 death of 27-year-old Matthew Granville.

An increase in rent for cropland in Wisconsin is strapping grain farmers who are dealing with plummeting prices for corn. Competition among farmers for land to grow crops or dump manure helped lead to an increase of about 8 percent for rented cropland this year compared to 2013, analysts said.

Clerk Scott McDonell said Friday that he decided to use a ballot with shading to differentiate the offices and candidates, something the model ballot doesn't have. He says staff at the Government Accountability Board don't have the authority to tell him not to do that.

The State Journal of Madison says the harvest is 10-to-14 days behind schedule, and yields are down because of the weather. Dane County grower Dave Mitchell says his crop of grapes is about average -- and he thought it would be lower due to this year's rough winter, cool summer, and heavy rains.
