For the study, a group of people who did not consider themselves to be avid runners had to train for six months. Ages of the 138 subjects ranged from 21 to 69 years old. They were given medical scans at the beginning and end of the training. According to the study's authors, subjects had notably less aortic artery stiffness at the end of the test.
