Biden to Voter: 'You're a Lying Dog-Faced Pony Soldier'

Newser — Rob Quinn

Joe Biden confused a 21-year-old voter in New Hampshire on Sunday with an insult from a movie that came out almost 50 years before she was born.

At a campaign event in Hampton on Sunday, Madison Moore warned the candidate that her question might be "mean" before asking: "How do you explain the performance in Iowa, and why should voters believe that you can win the national election?" In response, Biden said "Iowa's a caucus" and asked Moore if she had been to a caucus.

When she nodded, he jokingly said, "No, you haven't. You're a lying dog-faced pony soldier," bringing laughter from the audience, NBC reports.

Biden has used the line, which he says is from a John Wayne film, before.

According to TMZ, it is actually from the 1952 Tyrone Power movie Pony Soldier. Moore later said that her question had been fair and she had not been trying to "push on wounds" or "humiliate anyone," the Washington Post reports.

The Mercer University student said she had never been to a caucus, but nodded in response to Biden's question out of nervousness. "In reality, it is totally irrelevant whether I’ve been to a caucus or not," she said.

"Joe Biden has been performing incredibly poorly in this race. His inability to answer a simple question from a nobody college student like me only exacerbates that reality."
