Mystery Deepens After Boy, 3, Found on PorchNewser — Rob Quinn
Police in Buffalo are trying to figure out who left a boy around three years old on a home's front porch early Monday. Lois Augsburger tells WIVB that she found the boy around 8am asleep in a cardboard box she leaves out for cats.
He was wrapped in a blanket and was wearing only a diaper. "He must’ve heard me open the door and he came crawling out of the box and he had the blanket around him and I picked him up and I hugged him," she says.
A nearby childcare provider helped Augsburger look after the boy. She says he seemed to be in good spirits and told her he had a sister.
"When I asked him what his mom’s name was, he said 'Mommy,'" she says. Police, who have urged relatives to come forward, say the boy was not able to tell them how he ended up on the porch.
"The child is not extremely verbal, which made it difficult for us to attempt to figure out the circumstances of this child's appearance on the porch this morning," Police Capt.
Jeff Rinaldo told reporters Monday, adding that it was "extremely odd" for them not to have received a call about a missing child. He said officers had canvassed the neighborhood without success.
The boy was checked out in a hospital and found to be in good health. He is currently in the care of Child Protective Services. The Buffalo News reports that Florida residents who said they were the boy's relatives later came forward.
Sources tell the News that police are now investigating whether there is any link between the boy and two bodies found in a burned-out car Monday evening in Buffalo's Black Rock neighborhood.
