Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., questions former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch at the House Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, Friday, Nov. 15, 2019.
Behold, Now We Have Fartgate
Newser — Newser EditorsIt was a serious topic, truly. Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell was talking to Chris Matthews of MSNBC's Hardball on Monday night about the impeachment inquiry when a sound erupted.
And that sound is why the term "Fartgate" was trending Tuesday morning, per Yahoo. You can hear for yourself here or here. It sure sounds like someone broke wind in impressive fashion, though Swalwell swears to BuzzFeed that "it was not me!!!!!" He added that, "It's funny tho," in response to a reporter's query.
The show, meanwhile, is trying to blame the sound on a coffee mug scraping across a desk. (This can be serious stuff: A man's flatulence landed him in court.)
