July 31-- Jul. 31--SAYBROOK TOWN-SHIP -- Ashtabula County Metroparks started construction this week on its new fully accessible 1.3-mile paved trail at Red Brook Metropark.

The project also includes repaving the parking lot at Martini's Restaurant, as well as enabling handicapped access in and through the park.

Ashtabula County Commissioner Casey Kozlowski said he's very excited to see updates underway at Red Brook.

"These improvements are a great addition to our community that will serve residents and visitors well," he said.

The ADA-accessible trail will permit mobility at the former golf course and country club, and will help with transitions to the existing paved and/or unpaved former golf cart trails at the site. The park consists of 146 acres, according to the Metroparks website.

The trail was vetted through public meetings specifically on the acquisition and development of Red Brook Metropark by Ashtabula County Metroparks, and is a part of a larger grant-funded $1.1 million project, Red Brook Public Access Enhancement and Restoration Project.

The project is funded through a 75 percent Clean Ohio Conservation Fund grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission.

Metroparks held a consultant selection process in January and selected LJB, Inc., an environmental engineering and consulting firm in Eastlake for design and engineering of the project. In addition, Metroparks conducted a construction bidding process adhering to all the state and federal requirements, and selected NES Corp. of Cleveland as its trail and parking lot construction contractor. NES Corp. was the lowest bidder.

When completed, the new trail will connect with the existing trails to offer four to five miles of non-motorized access trail loops for walkers, runners, hikers and other trail users.

During the construction phase, people should be mindful of construction vehicles and stay away from the fresh asphalt.
